Training for Community Groups
Project Funder

Our role through this IHREC Grant Funding Programme is to help communities recognise that misinformation, and establish facts before deciding on any decision making that may negatively impact on their community
The overall aim of this project was to provide regional training workshops on designing and framing messaging to counter disruption from far-right agitators.
We focused on targeting 3 layers of participation:
- Our grassroots communities impacted by racism and discrimination.
- Lead organisations working with minoritised groups.
- Elected representatives in raising awareness of divisive issues impacting communities and presenting new narratives in preparation of upcoming elections.
Waterford Integration Services advertised the training programme across the Southeast region of Waterford, Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny and South Tipperary as these are the areas with a cluster of 22 IPAS centres for Refugees and Asylum Seekers as well as an Emergency Response Orientation Centre for Programme Refugees and 1 Emergency Rest Centres and IPAS accommodation for Ukrainians.
Delivery of 3 anti-racism training workshops to understand and respond to hate and extremism in the community. Methodology included use of slide presentations, interactive exercises focused on community issues, ice breakers and collating resource materials as a tool for communities. These resources were shared with others that could not attend the training workshops in person.
Additional benefits were continued engagement with participating agencies/communities through other activities e.g. anti racism events, street feast, cultural events, volunteering opportunities to foster inclusion, increased collaborative working and sharing knowledge and lived experience.
A local college group recorded and interviewed many of our diverse communities to showcase the benefits of a diverse society, which was highly acclaimed.

- We have disseminated information and community-based toolkits prepared by the Hope and Courage Collective, the iReport system developed by the Irish Network Against Racism (INAR), as well as sharing election manifestos prepared by INAR and ENAR (the European Network Against Racism) which outlined the outcomes expected from participating election candidates at local and European level.
- We accommodated 39 representatives/participants from agencies cross the region to participate in this training.
- Collaborated with local, national and international agencies to collate resource materials for the participating groups communities.
- Shared information on the election process in terms of far-right influencers who were standing as independents or trying to infiltrate other parties. We assisted with campaigns to support migrants to register to vote in their local area.
- We highlighted that we are all duty bearers in ensuring that our communities live in safety without fear of racial attacks.
